Guardian Ad Litem

In a family law case where parents are fighting over the parenting plan, the judge may appoint a Guardian ad Litem (GAL). A GAL is the child(ren)’s voice in court and will make recommendations of what is in the best interest of the child(ren).

During the case, the GAL will meet with the parents individually, the child(ren), and will conduct interviews of people who are familiar with the parents and the child(ren). These interviews could be with teachers, neighbors, therapists, friends, or other family members. The GAL may also review records that could provide information. These records include medical, psychological, or school records.  

At the conclusion of the case, the GAL will write a court report outlining the GAL’s investigation and making specific recommendations of what is in the child(ren)’s best interests.
